Shaykh Sulaymaan ar-Ruhaylee said:
Last year, we welcomed [the arrival of] Ramadhaan – rejoicing and full of happiness, and we were saying “Welcome! Welcome!”, and then as its days quickly passed we were saying to it “Slowly! Slowly!”
Then it passed by, and we [found ourselves] in a strange state with Ramadhaan.
When the month first entered upon us we were diligent and hastening [towards good deeds]; one from amongst us would read pages [and pages] from the mus.haf and not get bored, and he would strive in [voluntary] prayer, and in the remembrance of Allaah (’Azza wa Jall).
Then we became lazy, such that as the month passed and its days were over, one from amongst us felt a deep sense of regret, and wept, and promised himself that if he reached the next month of Ramadhaan, he would strive hard and would not be neglectful, and nor would he be lazy.
So we must consider this…here [and now] we have reached the month of Ramadhaan, and here [and now] we are entering it with happiness and joy, and [are full of] energy. So let us (our state) be like [how] the state of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) and the [righteous] predecessors was with the month of Ramadhaan.
[So] one of them would begin the month of Ramadhaan with energy and enthusiasm. And as every day of Ramadhaan passed, his enthusiasm and [worship] activity increased, [so much] so that the best of their deeds in Ramadhaan would be what [they did] at the end of Ramadhaan. And that was because of their knowledge of the great good and immense reward [to be attained] in this blessed month.
So beware my brother, and beware my sister from repeating what happened in the previous years, for we do not know, perhaps we may not reach Ramadhaan again.
So let us make the best of our days in the best of our months…in the month of Ramadhaan.
And let us strive and maintain our [worship] activity, and as the days of our month pass, our goodness increases, our diligence increases, and we draw closer to our Lord (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala).
[And] perhaps we will pass from this month with [having attained] for ourselves the Mercy of Allaah, and the Forgiveness of Allaah, and the Protection of Allaah from the fire, and with our supplications answered.
I ask Allaah (’Azza wa Jall) to make us among the people of good deeds, and Allaah (Ta’aala) is the Most High and All-Knowing, and may Allaah’s peace and blessings be upon our Prophet.
